- Heat is based on a 1964 real-life crime spree tracked by Detective Chuck Adamson, culminating in an armored car robbery at a Chicago grocery store where the criminal mastermind was shot and killed by police.
- Michael Mann originally developed Heat as a 90-minute TV pilot for NBC in the late 1980s, but the network rejected it after asking him to recast the lead role, which he refused to do.
- This was the first time Al Pacino and Robert De Niro appeared on screen together, despite both starring in The Godfather Part II, where their scenes never overlapped.
- Keanu Reeves turned down the role of Chris Shiherlis to perform Hamlet at the Manitoba Theatre Centre, leading to Val Kilmer being cast instead.
- Director Michael Mann hired British ex-SAS sergeant Andy McNab to train the actors with live ammunition for three months, and the U.S. Army later used footage from the film to train soldiers.
- Mann requested filming locations that had not been used in movies before, and his location scout successfully found 76 of the 85 shooting locations that had never appeared on film.
- The film crew nearly missed shooting a crucial scene at Los Angeles International Airport due to a security threat by the Unabomber.
- Principal photography lasted 107 days during the summer of 1995, with all shooting done on location in Los Angeles rather than on soundstages.
- The famous diner scene between Pacino and De Niro was shot with minimal rehearsals using multiple cameras to capture close-ups that would highlight the tension and nuances of their interaction.
