Trivia & production notes
- John Wayne turned down the lead role because he saw the script as an allegory criticizing blacklisting, a practice he supported.
- Gregory Peck declined the role after The Gunfighter came out the year before, believing it too similar; he later called it the biggest mistake of his career.
- Grace Kelly was cast opposite Gary Cooper despite a 29-year age gap, discovered by producer Stanley Kramer in an off-Broadway play.
- Lee Van Cleef made his film debut in High Noon, playing a character with no dialogue after refusing Kramer's demand that he surgically alter his nose.
- Screenwriter Carl Foreman was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee during filming for refusing to name suspected Communists.
- After Foreman's refusal to cooperate with HUAC became public, his production partner Stanley Kramer forced a dissolution of their partnership.
- Foreman sold his stake in the film to Kramer and moved to Britain before release, knowing the blacklist would prevent him from working in Hollywood.
- Gary Cooper performed the fight scene without a stunt double despite a bad back and recent ulcer surgery, wearing no makeup to show his character's fear and anguish.
- The film's running time almost exactly matches the story's timeline, with frequent clock shots reinforcing that the villain arrives on the noon train.
- Cooper won an Academy Award but was working in Europe, so John Wayne accepted the Oscar on his behalf, then made a joke about wondering why he didn't get the role.
