• I, Robot began as an original 1995 screenplay called Hardwired, an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery with no connection to Isaac Asimov's work, before the studio decided to acquire the rights to Asimov's novel and integrate his Three Laws of Robotics into the story.
• Arnold Schwarzenegger was attached to the lead role for several years, and Will Smith actively pursued taking over the part when Schwarzenegger's schedule conflicts prevented him from participating.
• Denzel Washington was offered the role of Detective Del Spooner but declined it.
• The original female lead character in Hardwired was named Flynn before being renamed Susan Calvin when the film adopted the I, Robot title.
• Director Alex Proyas described the production as severely micromanaged by the studio at every stage from pre-production through post-production, likening it to running a marathon while the studio threw obstacles in his path.
• The Audi RSQ was designed exclusively for the film, and market surveys showed the vehicle substantially improved the brand's image ratings.
• Most principal filming occurred in the Vancouver metropolitan area, with additional shooting in Chicago and the Dumont Dunes, using locations including the British Columbia Institute of Technology and the Vancouver Naval Museum.

• The film's release date was moved from July 2 to July 16, 2004, to avoid direct competition with Spider-Man 2.
• I, Robot received a 2D to 3D conversion released on Blu-ray 3D in 2012, several years after the original Blu-ray release in 2008.
