Trivia & production notes
- George Lucas and Steven Spielberg initially made a deal with Paramount Pictures in 1979 for five Indiana Jones films, though the series ended after the third installment in 1989.
- The idea for a 1950s-set Indiana Jones film with aliens came to Lucas after filming a scene with Harrison Ford for The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles in December 1992, which showed how the character could work in a different era.
- Harrison Ford initially resisted the alien plot concept, telling Lucas "No way am I being in a Steven Spielberg movie like that" before ultimately returning for the film.
- Lucas convinced Spielberg to use aliens by reframing them not as extraterrestrials but as interdimensional beings inspired by superstring theory.
- M. Night Shyamalan was hired to write an early draft but became overwhelmed trying to create a sequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark and struggled to keep Ford, Spielberg, and Lucas focused during development.
- Frank Darabont wrote a draft titled Indiana Jones and the City of Gods set in the 1950s with ex-Nazis as villains, but Lucas rejected it and took over the writing himself.
- The title was changed from David Koepp's proposed Indiana Jones and the Son of Indiana Jones to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which Spielberg felt was more inviting and Lucas insisted on including the word Kingdom.
- Spielberg shot the entire film in the United States because he did not want to be away from his family, unlike the previous Indiana Jones films.
- An extensive chase scene at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut was filmed while Spielberg's son Theo was studying there, with production crews converting downtown storefronts to look like the 1950s.
- The film was the largest production shot in Hawaii since Waterworld in 1995 and was estimated to generate between $22 million to $45 million for the local economy during filming in Hilo.
