- Quentin Tarantino spent over a decade writing the script, repeatedly expanding the story because he became overly attached to the material and wanted it to be his greatest work.
- Tarantino had completed three nearly finished script versions before moving on to direct Kill Bill, unable to arrive at a satisfying ending for the film.
- Producer Luc Besson convinced Tarantino to complete the project as a feature film rather than a mini-series.
- The film's title was inspired by the English-language title of director Enzo G. Castellari's 1978 war film The Inglorious Bastards.
- Tarantino originally wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to play Hans Landa but changed course to cast a native German-speaking actor, ultimately selecting Austrian Christoph Waltz.
- Adam Sandler was offered the role of Donny Donowitz but declined due to his schedule being committed to Funny People.
- Rod Taylor came out of retirement to play Winston Churchill, making it his final film appearance before his death in January 2015.
- Tarantino flew to Germany to meet with actress Nastassja Kinski about playing Bridget von Hammersmark, but negotiations fell through and Diane Kruger was cast instead.
- Eli Roth also directed the film-within-the-film Nation's Pride, which required 300 extras.
- Tarantino told Mélanie Laurent during her casting dinner that he was uncomfortable with casting her because she was famous in France, though she insisted she was not that well-known and was ultimately hired for the role of Shosanna.
