Trivia & production notes
- Emory University graduation scenes were filmed at Reed College in late 2006, rather than at the actual university.
- The Alaska scenes around the abandoned bus were shot 50 miles south of where Chris McCandless actually died, in Cantwell, because filming at the real location would have been too remote for a movie production.
- A replica bus built for the film became a tourist attraction at a restaurant in Healy, Alaska.
- Brian Dierker, who plays Rainey in the film, had no previous acting experience and joined the production specifically to serve as a guide for the rafting scenes.
- Eddie Vedder composed and performed the songs on the soundtrack, preparing 25 minutes of music as a palette of sounds for director Sean Penn to choose from.
- Eddie Vedder won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song for "Guaranteed" from the Into the Wild soundtrack.
- The film's score was written and performed by Michael Brook and Kaki King.
- Roger Ebert gave the film four stars out of four, calling it "spellbinding" and praising Emile Hirsch's performance as "great acting, and more than acting."
- The film opened in limited release in just four theaters before expanding to over 600 theaters three weeks later.
- The American Film Institute and National Board of Review both named Into the Wild one of the top ten films of 2007.
