- Jon Favreau originally planned for the Mandarin to be the main villain but decided against it after consulting with comic book writers, who argued the character was too fantastical for a grounded film approach.
- Shane Black advised the filmmakers to base Tony Stark's character arc on J. Robert Oppenheimer, who became depressed after realizing his role as 'the destroyer of worlds' during the Manhattan Project.
- Studio executives downplayed Tony Stark's alcoholism storyline because they worried about how an alcoholic Iron Man would affect marketing and merchandise sales.
- Don Cheadle replaced Terrence Howard in the role of Colonel Rhodes after Marvel Studios and Howard's representatives failed to reach agreement on his salary for the sequel.
