Trivia & production notes
- Shane Black was brought in to write and direct Iron Man 3 after Robert Downey Jr. personally reached out to him, citing their previous collaboration on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang as the only transition from Jon Favreau that he and Marvel could accept.
- Disney paid Paramount at least $115 million in October 2010 to acquire the worldwide distribution rights to Iron Man 3.
- Drew Pearce, originally hired to write a Runaways script, was brought in to co-write Iron Man 3 with Shane Black, though Black was initially reluctant to work with a partner rather than his preferred writing collaborator.
- Black envisioned Iron Man 3 as a Tom Clancy-style thriller with real-world villains rather than a superhero film featuring two men in iron suits fighting each other.
- The Mandarin was originally written as a genuine terrorist villain, but during script development Pearce suggested making him a fake character—an overacting British stage performer hired as a puppet by the real villain.
- Marvel executives pressured the writers to shift the main villain role from Maya Hansen to Killian due to concerns about merchandising losses from having a female antagonist, and also reduced the roles of several other major female characters in earlier drafts.
- Iron Man 3's middle act was deliberately structured around the model of Sullivan's Travels, with Tony Stark meeting various people on his journey across different locations.
- The climactic tanker battle was originally conceived to bring back a secondary character in the tradition of James Bond films, but was ultimately rewritten to feature Killian as the final antagonist with Pepper Potts causing his downfall.
- Shane Black chose to set the film during Christmas as a way to unite disparate characters and locations under a common experience, with the holiday also amplifying the loneliness of Tony Stark's journey.
- The film's ending was originally written with Tony Stark saying 'I am Tony Stark' as a callback to the first Iron Man, but was changed to 'I am Iron Man' to enhance mythical qualities.
