Trivia & production notes
- Steven Spielberg began developing Jurassic Park IV in May 2001, initially planning to produce rather than direct the film.
- Early script concepts for the fourth film included dinosaurs migrating to Costa Rica's mainland and genetically engineered human-dinosaur mercenaries.
- William Monahan wrote the first draft of Jurassic Park IV in July 2003 but left the project to work on Kingdom of Heaven.
- John Sayles wrote two drafts that featured a mercenary character training genetically modified Deinonychus for rescue missions, a concept that originated from Spielberg's idea of having a human train dinosaurs.
- The development of Jurassic Park IV stalled in 2005 because Spielberg was dissatisfied with script revisions and both he and Frank Marshall were occupied with other projects.
- After Mark Protosevich wrote two story treatments in 2011 that were both rejected, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver were hired in 2012 to write a new script incorporating Spielberg's three core ideas: a functioning dinosaur theme park, humans bonding with trained raptors, and an escaped human-eating dinosaur.
- Director Colin Trevorrow rejected the existing Jaffa and Silver script and developed his own story while keeping their concepts of raptors working alongside humans and a fully functioning dinosaur theme park.
- A Writers Guild of America arbitration panel ruled in March 2015 that Trevorrow and Connolly would share writing credit with Jaffa and Silver, despite Trevorrow and Connolly's strong disagreement with the decision.
- The film was originally promoted with a Super Bowl trailer crediting only Trevorrow and Connolly as writers before the WGA arbitration changed the credits.
