Trivia & production notes
- Orlando Bloom gained 10 kilograms to prepare for his role as Balian of Ibelin.
- Ridley Scott filmed Kingdom of Heaven in Ouarzazate, Morocco, the same location where he had previously shot Gladiator and Black Hawk Down.
- A full-scale ancient Jerusalem set was constructed and then enhanced with CGI backgrounds, additional horses, and troops to create the final on-screen locations.
- Moving Picture Company completed 440 visual effects shots, with Double Negative and Framestore CFC contributing additional CGI work.
- The soundtrack blends medieval, Middle Eastern, contemporary classical, and popular influences, departing significantly in style from Ridley Scott's earlier film Gladiator.
- Jerry Goldsmith's "Valhalla" theme from The 13th Warrior replaced some of Harry Gregson-Williams' original compositions for the film.
- Scott released a director's cut on December 23, 2005, stating it was the version that should have been released theatrically instead of the shortened theatrical cut.
- The theatrical version was edited to be shorter and follow a simpler plot than Scott's original vision, a change that Scott felt watered down the film.
- Edward Norton's performance as the leper-King Baldwin was praised as phenomenal and markedly different from his previous roles.
- The film earned only $47.4 million against a $130 million budget in the US and Canada but grossed $164.3 million internationally, becoming a success in Arabic-speaking countries especially Egypt.
