• The Writers Guild of America strike prevented Richard Maibaum from continuing work on the script, forcing Michael G. Wilson to complete it solo.
• Producer Barbara Broccoli's daughter Tina suggested Robert Davi for the role of Franz Sanchez after seeing him in the TV film Terrorist on Trial: The United States vs. Salim Ajami.
• Robert Davi stayed in character as Sanchez even when off-set while method acting for the role.
• David Hedison returned to play Felix Leiter sixteen years after first playing the character in Live and Let Die, and director John Glen was initially reluctant to cast the 61-year-old actor due to a parachuting scene.
• Wayne Newton sent a letter to the producers asking for a cameo role as Professor Joe Butcher because he had always wanted to appear in a Bond film.
• During filming of a parachute jump, a harness malfunction caused David Hedison to fall on the pavement, causing him to limp for the rest of production.
• The death scene of Milton Krest used a prosthetic head based on a mould of Anthony Zerbe's face that was so gruesome it had to be shortened and toned down to avoid censorship problems.
• For the climactic tanker chase, producers closed an entire section of Mexican Federal Highway 2D and used sixteen eighteen-wheeler trucks modified by Kenworth with enhanced engines and special steering or suspension features.
• Stuntman Rémy Julienne pulled off a rig tilting onto its side during the tanker chase without needing camera tricks or a mechanical rig designed for the stunt.
• Producer Albert R. Broccoli became ill during production in Mexico City, marking the first time he was not present during filming of a James Bond movie.
