- Richard Curtis originally conceived Love Actually as two separate films centered on the Hugh Grant and Colin Firth characters before deciding to combine them into an ensemble piece.
- The film did not initially have a Christmas setting, but Curtis added one because of his fondness for holiday movies.
- Curtis's original screenplay contained fourteen storylines, but four were eliminated, with two of them having already been filmed.
- A scene of Colin chatting up a female caterer at a wedding was written for Four Weddings and a Funeral before being cut and later reused in Love Actually.
- The Billy Mack music video for "Christmas Is All Around" deliberately mimics the style of Robert Palmer's 1986 "Addicted to Love" video.
- Richard Curtis described the film's editing process as a "catastrophe" and "the only nightmare scenario that I've been caught in."
- Alan Rickman's angry reaction to Rowan Atkinson's character in their scene together was genuine, as the tight production schedule had worn on him.
