Trivia & production notes
- Luc Besson structured Lucy in three distinct stylistic acts, drawing inspiration from his own Léon: The Professional for the first part, Inception for the second, and 2001: A Space Odyssey for the third.
- Besson drew inspiration for the film's concept from Lucy, a female Australopithecus afarensis whose 400-gram brain contrasts sharply with the modern human brain weight of approximately 1.4 kilograms.
- Lucy contains over 1,000 visual effects shots, making it the most effects-heavy film directed by Besson.
- Industrial Light & Magic studied chemical reactions, laser lighting displays from raves, and artist Perry Hall's work from What Dreams May Come to create Lucy's distinctive visual effects.
- Lucy was the second-largest French film production in 2013 with a budget of 48 million euros and represented the biggest production investment ever for Besson's company EuropaCorp.
- Principal photography took place at the Cité du Cinéma, a newly built megastudio on the outskirts of Paris, with additional filming in Taipei including scenes at Taipei 101.
- Besson grew frustrated during filming in Taiwan due to paparazzi and media attention disrupting the shoot, stating that nighttime filming became a nightmare because of intrusions from unnamed Hong Kong agencies.
- Some footage for Lucy was shot using IMAX cameras.
- Éric Serra composed the score for Lucy, continuing his work with Besson on all his films except Angel-A and The Family.
- The film incorporates Mozart's Requiem Introitus during Lucy's moment of awakening in the score.
