Trivia & production notes
- George Miller developed the concept of Mad Max: Fury Road across a 27-year period, beginning with the idea in 1987 and crystallizing the story about marauders fighting over human beings during a 1998 walk in Los Angeles.
- Miller created approximately 3,500 storyboard panels before writing the screenplay, matching nearly the same number of shots in the finished film to ensure the movie would be a continuous chase with minimal dialogue.
- Mel Gibson was originally set to star in Mad Max: Fury Road with 20th Century Fox, with Sigourney Weaver considered for Imperator Furiosa after Gibson suggested her following their collaboration on The Year of Living Dangerously.
- The project's initial production was indefinitely postponed after the September 11 attacks caused the American dollar to collapse against the Australian dollar, ballooning the budget beyond feasibility.
- George Miller committed to directing Happy Feet while Mad Max languished in development, and by the time he returned to the project years later, Mel Gibson's age had become a factor since the role required a younger actor.
- Miller initially planned to make Fury Road as an R-rated Japanese anime-inspired animated feature before deciding to shoot it as live-action instead.
- Tom Hardy, Armie Hammer, and Jeremy Renner were finalists for the lead role of Max, with Michael Fassbender, Joel Kinnaman, Heath Ledger, Eric Bana, and Eminem also considered at various stages, with Eminem declining due to unwillingness to leave the United States.
- The production was forced to relocate from Broken Hill, New South Wales to Namibia in November 2011 because unexpected heavy rains caused wildflowers to bloom in the desert.
- Of the 150 vehicles constructed for the film, only 88 survived to the end of filming, with the others built specifically to be destroyed according to their intended fate in scenes.
- The War Rig, the film's central vehicle, was built by combining a Tatra 815 and Chevrolet Fleetmaster with a Volkswagen Beetle fused to the hull, among other modifications.
