Trivia & production notes
- Mark Millar and Matthew Vaughn pitched an eight-hour Superman trilogy planned to release one film per year, with a scope comparable to The Lord of the Rings, chronicling Superman's life from Krypton through the loss of his powers.
- Charlie Cox was suggested by Matthew Vaughn as a potential Superman for his proposed trilogy, envisioned as a Golden Age-inspired version of the character.
- David S. Goyer pitched Christopher Nolan on a modernized approach to Superman during story discussions for The Dark Knight Rises in 2008, which impressed Nolan enough to pitch it to Warner Bros.
- Guillermo del Toro turned down the director position because he was committed to directing an adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness.
- In the original script, Zod was to be sucked into the Phantom Zone, but director Zack Snyder and writer David S. Goyer felt this was unsatisfying and reworked the ending with Superman's heat vision.
- Jay Oliva created the film's storyboards in his first live-action feature project and cited Japanese anime series Dragon Ball Z and Birdy the Mighty as inspiration for the epic battle scenes.
- Zack Snyder chose to shoot the film in 2-D and convert it to 3-D in post-production rather than shooting natively in 3-D due to technical limitations of the format.
- Filming took place across multiple Canadian locations including Burnaby's Mammoth Studios as the set for Krypton, and British Columbia towns Ucluelet and Nanaimo standing in for Alaska scenes.
- Principal photography began on August 1, 2011, at an industrial park near DuPage Airport under the codename "Autumn Frost".
- The film was shot using Panavision Panaflex Millennium XL2 cameras with C-Series anamorphic lenses on film stock rather than digitally.
