- Jon Voight accepted the minimum Screen Actors Guild wage to play Joe Buck, willingly taking a pay cut to land the role.
- Michael Sarrazin was originally cast as Joe Buck but was dropped when Universal, his studio at the time, demanded too much money for his services.
- Andy Warhol declined to appear in the film as an underground filmmaker, and the role went instead to Warhol superstar Viva while Warhol recovered in the hospital from an assassination attempt.
- The hotel where Joe Buck stays was demolished in 1972, just three years after the film's release.
- The famous line "I'm walkin' here!" originated when a taxi unexpectedly ran a red light during filming, and Hoffman stayed in character rather than breaking to acknowledge the accident.
- The film initially received an R rating but was changed to X after executives consulted with a psychologist about its homosexual content and potential influence on minors.
