- The greenlight for Minions came after writer Brian Lynch noticed how popular the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem simulator ride had become.
- Chris Renaud, a director on previous Despicable Me films, served only as an executive producer on Minions rather than in a directorial role.
- Sandra Bullock was paid $10 million to voice Scarlet Overkill.
- Pierre Coffin, the film's director, also voiced the Minions himself, making this one of the franchise films where he served as the lead actor.
