- Christopher McQuarrie became the first director in the Mission: Impossible series to helm more than one installment, returning after directing Rogue Nation.
- McQuarrie was initially hesitant to return for Fallout because he found the previous film's stunt sequences grueling and worried he would need to exceed them in the sequel.
- Tom Cruise collaborated with McQuarrie on developing the narrative and was keen to finally resolve the long-running storyline between Ethan and his wife Julia, which had been left ambiguous since the fourth film.
- An early script version involved Ethan assuming the villain Lark's identity for most of the film, but McQuarrie abandoned this idea because it made the story too long and intellectual while reducing focus on supporting characters.
- The final script for Fallout was only 33 pages long, with McQuarrie relying on the locations and actors to shape the story as filming progressed rather than a fully detailed screenplay.
- Actress Danielle Ferguson was pregnant during early filming of Fallout while simultaneously shooting scenes for another movie.
- Sean Harris became the Mission: Impossible series' first recurring villain after returning as Solomon Lane, a character McQuarrie and Cruise had originally decided to keep alive for future installments.
