- Ian McKellen turned down the role of Mission Commander Swanbeck in order to simultaneously play Magneto in X-Men and Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
- During the climactic knife fight, Cruise insisted on using a real blade attached to a cable, positioned to stop a quarter-inch from his eye, and asked co-star Dougray Scott to apply full force for authenticity.
- Hans Zimmer envisioned the film's score centered around female vocals and siren-like imagery but received heavy metal bands with male singers instead, which he felt weakened both the movie and its music.
- The film's original December 1999 release date was pushed to Memorial Day weekend 2000 due to screenplay and budget problems, as well as Tom Cruise's need to pause filming for Eyes Wide Shut publicity.
- Thandiwe Newton declined a role in Charlie's Angels to play Nyah Nordoff-Hall in Mission: Impossible 2 instead.
- Dougray Scott withdrew from the role of Wolverine in X-Men after scheduling conflicts and injuries from a motorcycle accident sustained during Mission: Impossible 2 filming prevented him from continuing.
- The soundtrack features Limp Bizkit's cover of Lalo Schifrin's Mission: Impossible theme titled "Take a Look Around" alongside Metallica's "I Disappear."
- The film debuted at the top of the DVD sales chart in its first week upon release in November 2000.
