Trivia & production notes

• Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones were first-time directors on the film, learning to make a full-length feature by doing it.
• The Pythons initially wrote the screenplay with half the material set in the Middle Ages and half in the present day before deciding to focus entirely on the medieval Holy Grail legend.
• No studio would finance the film, so the Pythons approached rock bands including Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, who viewed it as a tax write-off given UK income tax rates at the time reached 90 percent.
• The film's budget of £175,350 came from eight investors: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull, Michael White, a cricket team founded by Tim Rice, and three record companies.
• Most of the castle exteriors in the film are actually Doune Castle shot from different angles or miniatures, as the Scottish Department of the Environment denied permission to film at other castles two weeks before production began.
• A still photograph of Mount Buffalo National Park in Australia was filmed with candles placed underneath the frame to create a heat haze effect, providing a convincing location for the dark forest scene on a tight budget.
• John Cleese's favorite comedic take for the Castle Anthrax scene was left unused because an anachronistic coat was visible in the shot.
• The knights mime riding horses while porters trot behind them banging coconut shells together to create hoof sounds, a technique derived from old radio show sound effects.
• A real white rabbit was used for the Rabbit of Caerbannog fight scene, switched with puppets for the killing shots, and was covered with red liquid to simulate blood without the owner's knowledge.
• Graham Chapman refrained from drinking during production to maintain focus, having struggled with alcoholism that caused trembling and forgetfulness on set.
