Trivia & production notes
- Baz Luhrmann was inspired to make Moulin Rouge after watching a Bollywood film during a research trip to India, struck by how the audience's emotional engagement transcended cultural and language barriers.
- The film's plot draws from Puccini's opera La bohème, which Luhrmann himself directed at the Sydney Opera House in 1993.
- The character of Satine was based on French can-can dancer Jane Avril, a real performer at the Moulin Rouge in the 1890s.
- Leonardo DiCaprio auditioned for the role of Christian and even sang during his audition, but ultimately did not get the part.
- Heath Ledger also auditioned for Christian, though Luhrmann deemed him too young for the role despite finding his chemistry with Nicole Kidman to be extraordinary.
- Courtney Love auditioned for the role of Satine and approved the use of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' in the film.
- Nicole Kidman broke her ribs twice during dance sequences and tore knee cartilage from a fall while filming the 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend' number, injuries that prevented her from accepting the lead role in Panic Room.
- The production had to vacate its Fox Studios Sydney sound stages to make way for Star Wars: Episode II, which also starred Ewan McGregor.
- Filming took place from November 1999 to May 2000 with a budget of 50 million dollars.
- The film uses mid-to-late 20th century songs set in 1899 Paris, intentionally making Christian appear anachronistically ahead of his time as a musician.
