- Warren Beatty was the author Anne Fine's original choice to play Daniel Hillard, the role that went to Robin Williams.
- Tim Allen turned down offers to play both Daniel Hillard and Stu Dunmeyer in the film.
- Director Chris Columbus wanted Catherine O'Hara for Miranda Hillard based on her work in Home Alone, but she was unavailable due to filming The Nightmare Before Christmas.
- The Mrs. Doubtfire makeup took four hours to apply each time, and Robin Williams would walk around San Francisco in full costume between scenes.
