- Stephen Sommers was originally hired to direct but left the project due to creative differences and his commitment to a When Worlds Collide remake, leading Shawn Levy to take over.
- The museum interior was built on a soundstage in Burnaby, British Columbia and based on the American Museum of Natural History, though exterior shots of the real building were used in the film.
- Trainers spent several weeks teaching Crystal, the capuchin monkey playing Dexter, to slap and bite Ben Stiller on command.
