• Richard Curtis conceived the film's premise while lying awake at night, inspired by the idea of an ordinary person dating someone extraordinarily famous.
• Hugh Grant revealed in 2018 that the film was loosely based on a real relationship involving one of Richard Curtis's friends who met a famous person at Harrods.
• Julia Roberts initially rejected the role because she thought the pitch sounded terrible, but reconsidered after reading the script.
• To secure permission from Notting Hill residents to film on public streets, the location team wrote to thousands of people and donated to 200 of their chosen charities.
• The blue door of Will's house was auctioned for charity after filming concluded.
