- Richard Curtis conceived the film's premise while lying awake at night, inspired by the idea of an ordinary person dating someone extraordinarily famous.
- Hugh Grant revealed in 2018 that the film was loosely based on a real relationship involving one of Richard Curtis's friends who met a famous person at Harrods.
