Trivia & production notes
- George MacDonald Fraser chose India as the setting for Octopussy after extensive research he conducted for his novel Flashman, and because the Bond series had never visited that country before.
- The plot of the short story Octopussy is barely used in the film; its events are simply recounted by Bond as backstory for one character.
- The screenplay was rewritten to focus on jewellery smuggling after a real scandal in the Soviet Union in which the Moscow State Circus was being used to smuggle jewellery.
- Roger Moore was persuaded to return for Octopussy only after Sean Connery was announced to star in the competing Bond film Never Say Never Again, as producers believed an established actor would fare better against Connery.
- James Brolin claimed he had been hired and was preparing to move to London when Roger Moore changed his mind and returned to the role.
- The casting director wanted a South Asian actress to play Octopussy and considered the only two Indian actresses in Hollywood at the time before ultimately casting Swedish-born Maud Adams, whose hair was darkened to acknowledge the intended nationality.
- Vijay Amritraj, a professional Indian tennis player whom producer Albert R. Broccoli met at Wimbledon, was cast as Bond's ally and his character used a tennis racket as a weapon.
- In the pre-title sequence, stunt pilot J. W. Fornof flew a Bede BD-5J aircraft through an open hangar at over 150 miles per hour, with the plane tethered to a car via steel pole to hide the aircraft's support system.
- During filming of a train scene, stunt coordinator Martin Grace suffered a fractured left leg when the train unexpectedly entered an improperly surveyed section of track due to miscommunication with the second unit director.
- A cyclist who appeared passing through the middle of a sword fight sequence during the baby taxi chase was actually a bystander who accidentally walked into the shot, and the intrusion was captured by two cameras and kept in the final film.
