Trivia & production notes
- Tarantino spent the first five years developing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as a novel before deciding whether to adapt it into a screenplay.
- The inspiration for the film came from watching stunt double John Casino work with Kurt Russell on Death Proof in 2007, which fascinated Tarantino with the idea of longtime collaborators nearing the end of their working relationship.
- Tarantino wrote five full episodes of the fictional TV show Bounty Law to better understand the character of Rick Dalton, after becoming captivated by how much story 1950s western half-hour episodes could contain.
- Tarantino kept the only copy of the third act in a safe, and the only other copy of the complete script was burned by Tarantino himself after Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio read it.
- Tarantino transformed 2018 Los Angeles into 1969 primarily without CGI, though the production ultimately used over 75 digital visual effects shots to remove modern billboards and buildings from driving scenes.
- The Playboy Mansion scene required lengthy negotiations to film at the actual mansion after it was sold to a private owner following Hugh Hefner's death, and the owner was initially reluctant due to ongoing renovations.
- The dance choreography for the Playboy Mansion party scene was created by Toni Basil, who actually knew Sharon Tate and had previously dated Jay Sebring.
- Production designer Barbara Ling meticulously recreated historical storefronts including Larry Edmunds Bookshop by reproducing the original sign and tracking down period-appropriate merchandise, even recreating book covers.
- Spahn Ranch was reconstructed over three months at nearby Corriganville Movie Ranch in Simi Valley because the original location was completely destroyed by wildfire in 1970.
- Leonardo DiCaprio was permitted to light stunt coordinators on fire with a flamethrower during filming to improve the use of practical effects in action scenes.
