- Open Season was Sony Pictures Animation's first full-length CGI-animated film, announced in February 2004.
- The film's setting was inspired by Idaho towns Sun Valley and McCall, as well as the Sawtooth National Forest.
- Director Jill Culton selected Martin Lawrence and Ashton Kutcher for the lead roles by blindly listening to audition tapes without knowing their identities.
- Lawrence and Kutcher never met each other during production and only encountered each other at the film's premiere.
- Animators used a custom digital tool called shapers that enabled them to distort character models with effects like squash, stretch, and smears typical of hand-drawn animation.
- Ramin Djawadi composed the film's score while Paul Westerberg, formerly of The Replacements, wrote and performed several original songs.
- A 10-inch vinyl edition of the soundtrack included three songs absent from the CD version, including Reyli's Latin American Spanish version of a track.
- The film earned six Annie Award nominations, including Best Animated Feature, though it lost in that category to Cars.
- Open Season grossed $200.8 million worldwide, with $88.6 million from the United States and $112.2 million from international markets.
