- Guillermo del Toro conceived Pan's Labyrinth from notebooks he had maintained for twenty years, filled with sketches, ideas, and story fragments, and once lost one in a London taxi before a cabbie returned it to him two days later.
- Del Toro pitched the entire film to actor Sergi López in a two-and-a-half-hour explanation with all its details before any script was written, and López received the finished script a year later to find it matched del Toro's verbal description exactly.
- The faun character was inspired by del Toro's childhood lucid dreams, in which a faun would emerge from behind his grandfather's clock every night at midnight.
- The faun was originally conceived as a beautiful classical creature but was redesigned into an earthy, mysterious being constructed from moss, vines, tree bark, and a goat-like face that conveyed both trustworthiness and danger.
- Actors from del Toro's previous film The Devil's Backbone, Fernando Tielve and Íñigo Garcés, appear as unnamed guerrilla soldiers in Pan's Labyrinth as a connection between the two films.
- Del Toro wrote the film's English subtitles himself because he found the subtitles for his previous Spanish-language film The Devil's Backbone to be poor, spending a month on the translation to ensure it wouldn't feel like watching a typical subtitled film.
