• Terry Rossio wrote an early script with a female villain, but it was discarded after Johnny Depp worried the character would be redundant with his concurrent role in Dark Shadows, which also featured a female antagonist.
• Directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg were selected partly because their Academy Award-nominated film Kon-Tiki demonstrated they could work effectively with a limited budget.
• Gore Verbinski, who directed the original three Pirates films, believed the only justification for making a fifth film was financial.
• Johnny Depp was invited to collaborate on the script because he believed this would be the last Pirates film and wanted to ensure it ended properly.
• The directors drew inspiration from Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton films when developing the tone for Dead Men Tell No Tales.
