Trivia & production notes
- Screenwriter Deborah Moggach spent over two years developing the script, writing approximately ten drafts with sole discretion and minimal studio instruction.
- Director Joe Wright made his feature film directorial debut with Pride and Prejudice, having previously worked only in television and social realism.
- Wright required the three main couples to participate in three weeks of improvisation workshops and rehearsal before filming began.
- Keira Knightley initially hesitated to accept the role of Elizabeth Bennet because she feared recreating Jennifer Ehle's acclaimed performance from the 1995 BBC adaptation.
- Matthew Macfadyen was cast as Darcy partly because Keira Knightley's casting as Elizabeth allowed Wright to hire a relatively unknown actor for the iconic role.
- Carey Mulligan learned about her audition for the Bennet sisters through a dinner hosted by Julian Fellowes, after she had written him a letter when failing to get into drama school.
- Tamzin Merchant was hired to play Georgiana Darcy despite having no previous acting experience after sending a letter to the casting director.
- The film was shot entirely on location across seven estates in six English counties over eleven weeks in summer 2004, with the dance scenes filmed in a converted potato warehouse.
- Visual effects company Double Negative digitally removed anachronisms like electricity pylons and gravel driveways from various filming locations to maintain period authenticity.
- Screenwriter Deborah Moggach added scenes from a male perspective, such as Bingley practicing his marriage proposal, to portray Darcy as a human character rather than simply stuck-up.
