Trivia & production notes
- James Cameron stopped working on his Alien sequel project after Fox greenlit Alien vs. Predator, believing the crossover would damage the franchise's credibility.
- Ridley Scott initially requested a $250 million budget for an adult-oriented film, but Fox pushed back, wanting a lower age rating to reach a broader audience.
- The film was originally going to be titled Paradise, named after John Milton's poem, but Scott rejected it as too revealing, leading Fox CEO Thomas Rothman to suggest Prometheus instead.
- Jon Spaihts completed his first draft of the screenplay in three and a half weeks, submitting it on Christmas Day 2009, and Ridley Scott returned it with notes within 12 hours.
- Damon Lindelof was brought in to rewrite the script after Scott felt it relied too heavily on Alien elements, with Lindelof arguing that a true prequel should feature different characters and themes rather than just lead into the original film.
- Lindelof spent nearly five weeks writing his first draft, which he submitted in mid-September 2010, after working closely with Scott five days a week during July and August to develop the film's vision.
- Spaihts credited his hiring to pitching the concept of a "bridge" that would connect the human characters' story to the Alien saga, which he claimed came to him spontaneously without premeditation.
- Scott stated that while Alien inspired the project, Prometheus evolved into its own mythology, with the connection between films deliberately kept vague during marketing to build audience anticipation.
- An initial release date of December 2011 was canceled, and the film was later scheduled for June 8, 2012, after a planned March 9, 2012 release was postponed.
- Spaihts periodically constrained Scott's visual ideas during script development, reminding him that characters were subject to gravity and could not simply float in scenes they were discussing.
