Trivia & production notes
- Director Roger Michell exited the project in October 2006 after only a few months, citing slow progress on the script, forcing producers to push back the release date from May 2008 to late 2008.
- Marc Forster, the chosen director, was not originally a Bond fan and only accepted the job after watching Casino Royale, which he felt had made the character more human and relatable.
- Forster was the first Bond director not from a Commonwealth nation, born in Germany and raised in Switzerland, though he noted Bond's mother is Swiss.
- Paul Haggis completed his script draft just two hours before the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike officially began, preventing further professional rewrites for months.
- During the writers' strike, Daniel Craig and director Forster were permitted to rewrite scenes together since actors and directors could work on material while professional writers could not be hired.
- The title Quantum of Solace was chosen by Wilson only days before its announcement on January 24, 2008, and was sourced from a short story in Ian Fleming's 1960 anthology For Your Eyes Only.
- Forster designed the action sequences around the four classical elements of earth, water, air, and fire rather than following Haggis's original climax set in the Swiss Alps.
- The death of the character Fields was conceived as a homage to Oddjob's murder of Jill Masterson in Goldfinger, symbolizing that oil had replaced gold as the most precious material.
- Producers rejected Haggis's idea that Vesper Lynd had a child because Bond was an orphan and could not simply abandon a child he discovered.
- Joshua Zetumer was hired during filming to reshape scenes in the later portions of the shoot, rewriting dialogue daily based on the actors' improvisations and ideas.
