• James Cameron wrote the first draft of the screenplay while simultaneously working on The Terminator and Aliens, both of which he would later direct.
• Kevin Jarre pitched the core concept of searching for POWs in Vietnam while living on dog food and needing to finish a spec script he was working on.
• Stallone rewrote Cameron's first draft to add political themes and simplify the story, which Cameron's version had stretched across 30-40 pages before any action began.
• Sylvester Stallone vetoed the producers' choice of John Travolta to play Rambo's sidekick in the POW rescue mission.
