Trivia & production notes
- Tarantino came up with the title Reservoir Dogs after a video store customer misheard his recommendation of the French film Au revoir les enfants.
- Harvey Keitel agreed to serve as a co-producer on the film, which helped Tarantino and Lawrence Bender secure $1.5 million in funding after initially planning to shoot on just $30,000.
- Tim Roth specifically requested the role of Mr. Orange because he wanted to play an English actor portraying an American playing a robber.
- Actor Lawrence Tierney was fired during the first week of production after the cast and crew grew to dislike him due to his volatile on-set behavior, with the crew applauding when Tarantino dismissed him at breakfast.
- The warehouse scenes were filmed inside an unused mortuary that contained caskets, funeral equipment, embalming fluid, and a hearse, with the building later demolished.
- Tarantino deliberately chose not to show the diamond robbery on screen for both budgetary reasons and to keep details ambiguous, allowing the film to explore other themes.
- The Reservoir Dogs soundtrack was the first soundtrack for a Tarantino film and established the template for his later soundtracks, including extensive use of dialogue snippets.
- Tarantino used 1970s music for the film but intentionally chose songs to serve as a counterpoint to the on-screen violence, while aiming for an overall 1950s aesthetic.
- Comedian Steven Wright, known for his deadpan delivery, was chosen as the voice of the K-Billy radio DJ, with the fictional station playing a prominent role in the film.
- In 1991, Tarantino directed a short film version of Reservoir Dogs at the Sundance Institute as a proof of concept for the full feature.
