Trivia & production notes
- Visual effects supervisor John Knoll pitched the concept for Rogue One in 2003 as a treatment called "Destroyer of Worlds" during production of Revenge of the Sith, then re-pitched it to Disney after the studio acquired Lucasfilm.
- Director Gareth Edwards initially wrote the script with a happy ending where the main characters survive, but producers chose a tragic ending instead and the original version was never filmed.
- Tony Gilroy was brought in for five weeks of reshoots in May 2016, writing additional scenes and serving as second-unit director, and was eventually paid $5 million and given screenplay credit alongside Chris Weitz.
- The film was deliberately made without an opening crawl to distinguish it from the main saga films, with Kathleen Kennedy confirming in November 2016 that it would instead begin traditionally with just the title.
- The title "Rogue One" carries three meanings: a reference to the Red Squadron from A New Hope, the first Star Wars film outside the main saga, and a description of protagonist Jyn Erso's personality.
- Felicity Jones was cast as lead character Jyn Erso in March 2015 after initial consideration of actresses including Tatiana Maslany and Rooney Mara.
- Genevieve O'Reilly reprised her role as Mon Mothma from Revenge of the Sith in Rogue One.
- James Earl Jones returned to voice Darth Vader in Rogue One, confirmed in June 2016.
- Director Gareth Edwards intended the film's style to resemble a war movie rather than a traditional Star Wars narrative, stating the story would show how "good guys are bad" and "bad guys are good."
- Six different writers contributed to Rogue One's script across various stages of development: Gary Whitta, Chris Weitz, Tony Gilroy, Christopher McQuarrie, Scott Z. Burns, and Michael Arndt.
