Trivia & production notes
- The U.S. Department of State commissioned Disney to make this film as part of the Good Neighbor Policy, aiming to counter the influence of Nazi Germany on Latin American governments.
- Walt Disney himself led a goodwill tour of South America in 1941 with roughly twenty composers, artists, and technicians from his studio, visiting Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, and Peru.
- The federal government provided loan guarantees for the film because Disney had overexpanded before European markets closed due to the war and was dealing with labor unrest, including an ongoing strike.
- The film featured live-action documentary footage of modern Latin American cities with skyscrapers and fashionable residents, which surprised many American viewers accustomed to associating such imagery only with the U.S. and Europe.
- The Brazilian song "Aquarela do Brasil," written in 1939, failed to gain traction initially but became an international hit after appearing in this film, becoming the first Brazilian song to receive over a million plays on American radio.
- The title song "Saludos Amigos" was composed by Charles Wolcott with lyrics by Ned Washington specifically for the film.
- Chilean cartoonist René Ríos Boettiger created Condorito, one of Latin America's most popular cartoon characters, partly in response to the film's portrayal of a small, incapable Chilean airplane character named Pedro.
- The film premiered in Rio de Janeiro on August 24, 1942, before its U.S. release on February 6, 1943.
- Film historian Alfred Charles Richard Jr. stated that Saludos Amigos accomplished more in a few months to build community between the Americas than the State Department had in fifty years.
- The film's original score was composed by three musicians: Edward H. Plumb, Paul J. Smith, and Charles Wolcott.
