Trivia & production notes
- Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans conceived the film with writing partners Buddy Johnson and Phil Beauman, but screenwriters Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer also pitched a similar parody script, and both teams received writing credits despite the Wayans' claim that none of the competing script's work appeared in the final film.
- Anna Faris was a first-time actress who had planned to move to London after graduating from the University of Washington but auditioned for Scary Movie instead, landing her first acting role.
- The original working title for the film was going to be 'Scream If You Still Know What I Did Last Halloween,' and notably, 'Scary Movie' was itself the original working title for what eventually became the Scream franchise.
- Singer Aaliyah turned down the role of Brenda out of respect for fellow R&B artist Brandy, believing the character was parodying Brandy's role in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
- Filming took place from August 16 to October 18, 1999, primarily in British Columbia, Canada.
- The original Ghostface costume from the Scream series was used in the scene where Cindy notices the killer outside the school, while other scenes used replica costumes.
- The film's poster tagline was 'No Mercy. No Shame. No Sequel,' but when Scary Movie 2 was released a year later, the sequel's tagline became 'We Lied.'
- The climax of Scary Movie mimics The Matrix fight scenes and uses bullet time effects, while the ending is a takeoff of the twist ending from The Usual Suspects.
- Scary Movie opened on 2,912 screens on July 7, 2000, debuted at number one at the US box office with a $42.3 million opening weekend, and broke Air Force One's record for the biggest opening weekend of any R-rated film.
- A compilation album titled Scary Movie: Music That Inspired The Soundtrack? was released on July 4, 2000, through TVT Soundtrax and blends hip-hop and rock music.
