Trivia & production notes
- Andrew Kevin Walker wrote the Seven spec script while working as a sales assistant at Tower Records in 1991, drawing inspiration from the crime and drug abuse he witnessed during his time living in New York City.
- Walker intentionally wrote the script to leave audiences feeling violated and exhausted rather than satisfied, deliberately keeping the ending ambiguous to avoid validating audience expectations.
- Director Jeremiah S. Chechik demanded Walker remove the original ending featuring Tracy's severed head in a box and replace it with a church confrontation scene, forcing Walker to write thirteen total drafts of the script.
- David Fincher initially stated he would rather die of colon cancer than direct another film after his negative experience with Alien 3, but was convinced to take on Seven after reading the original script with its dark, uncompromising ending.
- Brad Pitt agreed to star in Seven on the condition that the original head-in-the-box ending be retained, upset that his previous film Legends of the Fall had its ending altered due to negative test-audience reactions.
- Producer Arnold Kopelson supported keeping the dark ending only after being reassured that the severed head would not actually be shown on screen.
- Fincher and New Line Cinema's Michael De Luca decided to begin filming within six weeks using the original script to avoid further executive interference and potential demands to lighten the film's tone.
- Brad Pitt rejected multiple film offers to take the Mills role because he wanted to escape typecasting as a romantic lead and work on a dialogue-heavy thriller with documentary-style urban settings.
- Ned Beatty declined the role of John Doe, calling the script the most evil thing he had ever read.
- Fincher auditioned approximately 100 people for the role of Tracy before Brad Pitt personally contacted Gwyneth Paltrow to encourage her to meet with the director.
