• Jeff Fowler made his feature directorial debut with this film after previously directing cutscenes for Shadow the Hedgehog video game.
• The film changed studios from Sony Pictures to Paramount Pictures in October 2017 after Sony put the project in turnaround, though almost the entire production team stayed on.
• The working title during production was "Casino Night", named after a stage from the Sonic video games.
• Early drafts included Sonic's Super Sonic transformation from the games, but director Fowler felt it was premature and wanted to focus on Sonic and Robotnik's origin story instead.
