Trivia & production notes
- Jez Butterworth was brought in to refine the script by removing dialogue-heavy scenes, arguing that Bond should shoot adversaries rather than spend time talking to them.
- Sam Mendes initially considered a plot twist where M would be revealed as the villain, but Ralph Fiennes vetoed the idea.
- The villain Franz Oberhauser was inspired by a minor character from Ian Fleming's short story Octopussy, whom Mendes reimagined as a father figure from Bond's childhood.
- Spectre retroactively established that the Quantum organisation from previous films was actually a division of Spectre rather than an independent group.
- At age 50, Monica Bellucci became the oldest actress ever cast as a Bond girl, decades after auditioning unsuccessfully for Tomorrow Never Dies.
- Dave Bautista's character Mr Hinx speaks only one word in the entire film, and Bautista deliberately took the role to revive the silent henchman archetype.
- Jesper Christensen returned as Mr White despite his character being killed in a deleted epilogue scene from Quantum of Solace, which was removed before that film's final cut.
- Sam Mendes became the first director to oversee two consecutive Bond films since John Glen, who directed five in a row ending with Licence to Kill in 1989.
- The acquisition of Spectre rights concluded decades of litigation between Eon Productions and Kevin McClory, which began when McClory sued Ian Fleming in 1961 over ownership of Thunderball.
- The Spectre production crew exceeded one thousand people, making it a larger undertaking than Skyfall.
