Trivia & production notes
- Roger Corman was the first producer to option Spider-Man in the 1970s, planning to develop it at Orion Pictures with Stan Lee writing a screenplay featuring Doctor Octopus and Cold War themes.
- The Cannon Group purchased Spider-Man film rights for $225,000 in 1985, but the producers mistook the character for a werewolf-like creature and initially planned a horror film with Peter Parker transforming into a human tarantula.
- James Cameron submitted a darker treatment for Spider-Man to Carolco Pictures in 1993 that featured a sex scene between Spider-Man and Mary Jane atop the Brooklyn Bridge and reimagined villains Electro and Sandman as a businessman and bodyguard.
- Cameron envisioned Leonardo DiCaprio for the role of Peter Parker when he was developing the Spider-Man film in the mid-1990s.
- David Fincher declined to direct the 2002 Spider-Man film because he felt Peter Parker's origin story was dumb and proposed basing the film on The Night Gwen Stacy Died instead, an idea the studio rejected.
- Sam Raimi became attached to direct after pitching himself to Sony executives and deliberately ending his one-hour pitch early so he would not overstay his welcome if they were uninterested.
- The filmmakers chose to give Spider-Man organic webbing that shoots from his wrists rather than mechanical web-shooters from the comics, a decision that was controversial with long-time comic book fans.
- Screenwriter David Koepp proposed that Peter Parker should not receive his Spider-Man suit until halfway through the film to lengthen the origin story, and that Peter and Mary Jane should remain apart at the end for greater romantic tension.
- Sam Raimi removed Doctor Octopus from the final script to focus on the surrogate father-son dynamic between Norman Osborn and Peter Parker, which he found more compelling than having two villains.
- Screenwriters Rosenberg, Sargent, and Cameron all voluntarily relinquished credit for the final Spider-Man screenplay, allowing David Koepp to receive sole writing credit.
