Trivia & production notes
- Kevin Feige initially wanted to structure the Spider-Man films like Harry Potter, with each movie covering a different school year.
- Sony's requirement that the sequel release in 2019 created a marketing challenge since Spider-Man dies in Infinity War and doesn't return before Endgame, when promotional materials would already be running.
- The film is set eight months after Avengers: Endgame concludes, forcing the screenplay to address the confusing aftermath where some students are five years older than their peers.
- Director Jon Watts considered including Morbius, Blade, or the Chameleon as the villain before settling on Mysterio.
- Mysterio was chosen as the villain partly because his history of deception allowed the writers to explore themes of fake news, which felt relevant to the story of a grieving Spider-Man.
- An early script iteration proposed making Mysterio actually be a Skrull alien in disguise.
- Filming moved from Atlanta to London primarily because the plot takes Peter and his friends around the world rather than keeping the story in New York City.
- The stealth suit design was inspired by Spider-Man Noir, chosen by director Jon Watts to represent Peter experimenting with a new kind of superhero.
- Ironhead Studio, which had worked on The Amazing Spider-Man films, developed custom skull caps with built-in fans to prevent the suit's goggles from fogging up.
- Tom Holland publicly revealed the film's title Spider-Man: Far From Home at the end of June 2018, as Kevin Feige believed it would leak once filming began anyway.
