Trivia & production notes
- Tom Holland personally lobbied Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman to resume negotiations after Sony initially announced Spider-Man would leave the MCU, ultimately leading to a new deal that kept the character in Marvel's cinematic universe.
- Disney agreed to co-finance 25% of the film in exchange for 25% of its profits while retaining merchandising rights, a significant change from Marvel Studios' original deal where they received only 5% of revenue.
- Director Jon Watts had completed his two-film deal with Marvel and would have needed to sign on again to direct the third Spider-Man film, and he was receiving offers from other studios including potentially another Marvel Studios property.
- The screenwriters considered featuring Kraven the Hunter as the main antagonist but abandoned the idea because Sony wanted to establish the character in his own solo film first.
- The original screenplay concept was inspired by It's a Wonderful Life, where Peter Parker makes a wish about his now-public Spider-Man identity, which led to introducing Doctor Strange and exploring the multiverse.
- Green Goblin was not originally written as the main villain but was promoted to that role after the screenwriters narrowed down which returning characters from previous Spider-Man films would appear.
- America Chavez was initially considered to appear in the film in the apprentice-like role that Ned Leeds ultimately filled, before Chavez was instead used in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
- The film's release was originally meant to come after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but schedule changes reversed this timeline, requiring rewrites so Strange would not yet have firsthand knowledge of the multiverse.
- Charlie Cox, who played Daredevil in Netflix's Marvel series, was contacted by Kevin Feige to reprise his role in upcoming MCU projects, beginning with appearances in No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
- Tom Holland indicated that the film needed all of the returning actors to sign on or none of them would, making the entire ensemble conditional on complete agreement from the cast.
