Trivia & production notes
- Colin Trevorrow's original script for Episode IX, titled Star Wars: Duel of the Fates, featured Kylo Ren discovering a Sith holocron in Darth Vader's castle on Mustafar and included the concept of a superlaser-equipped Star Destroyer.
- Colin Trevorrow departed the project in September 2017 due to creative differences with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy after he failed to deliver a satisfactory script despite multiple drafts.
- J.J. Abrams was the only person who knew the film's title, The Rise of Skywalker, before its official announcement at Star Wars Celebration in April 2019.
- Chris Terrio co-wrote the script with J.J. Abrams despite having largely stepped back from working on large-scale films at the time and not knowing Abrams socially before agreeing to the project.
- The film's working titles during development were Black Diamond and then TrIXie, with the latter chosen to incorporate the roman numeral IX into the title.
- George Lucas met with the story team before the new script was written to help determine how to conclude the trilogy.
- Trevorrow had planned to shoot the film entirely on 65mm film using a new processing facility Kodak developed in the UK.
- A TIE fighter design called the First Order TIE Echelon, originally created for Trevorrow's version of the film, was repurposed and built as an attraction at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge theme park.
