Trivia & production notes
- George Lucas provided rough story treatments for Episodes VII-IX to Disney, but the company ultimately discarded his ideas and he had no further involvement with the film.
- Michael Arndt wrote the first screenplay but left the project after eight months, saying he needed 18 more months than Disney and director J.J. Abrams could provide.
- Early drafts featured Luke Skywalker appearing midway through the film, but writers realized his presence overshadowed the main characters, so they made him a plot device appearing only in the final scene.
- Brad Bird was the studio's top choice to direct but withdrew due to commitments to Tomorrowland.
- Matthew Vaughn was an early directorial candidate and actually dropped out of X-Men: Days of Future Past to pursue the Star Wars opportunity.
- J.J. Abrams was recommended for the director job by Steven Spielberg and initially rejected the offer before Lawrence Kasdan convinced him to take it.
- After Michael Arndt's departure, J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan completed the first draft in six weeks by planning the story while walking through Santa Monica, New York City, Paris, and London.
- A fictional language for the film was created by YouTube star Sara Forsberg, known for her viral video series about what languages sound like to foreigners.
- Abrams intentionally withheld certain plot details from the script, including Rey and Finn's last names and backgrounds.
- In a 2015 interview, Lucas said Disney wanted a retro movie, which conflicted with his approach of making each Star Wars film completely different from the others.
