Trivia & production notes
- Rian Johnson drew inspiration from classic war and adventure films including Twelve O'Clock High, The Bridge on the River Kwai, and Three Outlaw Samurai while developing the story.
- The scene where Rey sees only herself in a vision was intentionally written to reveal that her parents were nobodies, which Johnson felt would be the hardest revelation for both the character and audience to accept.
- Joaquin Phoenix was approached to play the role of DJ but declined the offer.
- Frank Oz's name was excluded from pre-release marketing materials to keep his return as Yoda secret, and he remained on set during filming to maintain the surprise.
- Second unit photography at Skellig Michael in Ireland was scheduled for five days in September 2015 but lost its first day to poor weather and rough conditions.
- The film was shot under the working title Space Bear during principal photography, which began in February 2016.
- The production designer originally planned 160 sets but Rian Johnson trimmed this down, ultimately resulting in 125 sets built across 14 sound stages at Pinewood Studios.
- The Last Jedi features more practical creature effects than any Star Wars film, with 180 to 200 creatures created using practical effects rather than computer graphics.
- Yoda was created using puppetry to match how the character appeared in The Empire Strikes Back rather than using digital imagery, which Johnson felt would have been inauthentic to Luke's experience of the character.
- Mark Hamill initially expressed disagreement with Luke Skywalker's disillusioned characterization during production but later regretted making his misgivings public, comparing the experience to his past conflicts with George Lucas on Return of the Jedi.
