- Christopher Nolan developed the concept for Tenet over two decades before beginning the screenplay in 2014.
- The film's title is a palindrome and references the Sator Square, a historic word puzzle.
- While writing Tenet, Nolan deliberately avoided watching spy films to prevent influence, instead drawing on his memories and his impression of how Sergio Leone made Once Upon a Time in the West.
