Trivia & production notes
- James Cameron initially considered The Terminator a complete story and was less enthusiastic about making a sequel than Arnold Schwarzenegger, who wanted to continue the story immediately after finishing the first film.
- A dispute with rights holder Hemdale Film Corporation delayed the sequel for years; Hemdale co-founder John Daly had attempted to alter The Terminator's ending against Cameron's wishes, nearly causing a physical confrontation.
- Cameron had given away 50% of his rights to Hemdale to get The Terminator made, and then sold half of his remaining stake to ex-wife Gale Anne Hurd for $1 following their 1989 divorce.
- Carolco Pictures spent $17 million total to acquire the film rights and secure the necessary deals before development even began, with the owner describing it as the most difficult deal Carolco had ever conducted.
- Cameron had only six to seven weeks to write the sequel and initially approached the T-1000 as a liquid-metal Terminator after deciding that a fight between two identical Arnold Schwarzenegger characters would be boring.
- The T-1000's catchphrase 'Hasta la vista, baby' originated as something William Wisher and James Cameron casually said to each other after their telephone calls.
- John Connor's character was inspired by the 1985 Sting song 'Russians,' with Cameron crediting the lyrics 'I hope the Russians love their children too' as the genesis for the character.
- Carolco paid most of Schwarzenegger's $12-15 million salary using a financed $12.75 million Gulfstream III jet rather than cash to ease the financial burden.
- Linda Hamilton trained three hours a day, six days a week, received judo and military training, and averaged only four hours of sleep per day during filming due to caring for her infant son.
- Robert Patrick, who was living in his car when cast as the T-1000, based his character's facial expressions on those of an eagle and drew inspiration from observing hunting creatures like reptiles, insects, and sharks.
