Trivia & production notes
- The Terminator franchise's previous owner, Halcyon Company, filed for bankruptcy in 2009, halting production on a fifth film in the series.
- Hedge fund Pacificor purchased the Terminator franchise for $29.5 million in February 2010 as the largest creditor in Halcyon's bankruptcy, and the deal included a guarantee to pay Halcyon $5 million for each additional sequel produced.
- James Cameron had a clause in the original Terminator rights agreement that would have given him ownership of the franchise in 2019, which influenced the lower-than-expected price paid when Annapurna Pictures acquired the rights.
- Justin Lin departed as director due to his commitment to Fast & Furious 6, and Rian Johnson, Denis Villeneuve, and Ang Lee were all approached before Alan Taylor was ultimately selected.
- Alan Taylor's girlfriend, storyboard artist Jane Wu, urged him to turn down the Terminator Genisys offer after reading the script, believing he should direct something more personal, but Taylor was ultimately persuaded by the prospect of working with Arnold Schwarzenegger and continuing Cameron's legacy.
- Screenwriters Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier turned down the project three times before James Cameron persuaded them to accept the assignment.
- Paramount Pictures chose Emilia Clarke to play Sarah Connor over Brie Larson, who the studio had preferred, because director Alan Taylor favored Clarke for the role.
- Jason Clarke was cast as John Connor partly because David Ellison, the co-producer, was impressed by Clarke's performance in Zero Dark Thirty, a film financed by Annapurna Pictures.
- Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to play the Terminator for the fourth time, marking his comeback to the franchise after a gap of several years.
- The original financing arrangement with Annapurna Pictures was dissolved in January 2014, with Skydance Productions and Paramount Pictures taking over funding while Megan Ellison remained as an executive producer.
