- Marc Webb negotiated for a significant pay raise after the first film's success, having earned roughly $1 million to direct the original.
- Shailene Woodley completed filming all of her scenes as Mary Jane Watson by March 2013, but the character was cut from the final film to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen's relationship.
- Andrew Garfield suggested the film explore Peter Parker's sexuality and proposed a romance with a gender-swapped version of Mary Jane Watson.
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was shot on 35mm anamorphic film rather than digitally, making it the first Spider-Man film shot entirely in New York state and the largest film production ever undertaken there at the time.
- A car chase scene was filmed in Rochester because the city had less restrictive speed laws than New York City.
- Makeup artists spent four and a half hours applying blue paint and prosthetics to Jamie Foxx's body to transform him into Electro for each day of filming.
- During filming, Emma Stone ad-libbed the line "Peter!" while her character Gwen was being bound to a car, and the improvisation was kept in the finished film.
- A scene showing Gustav Fiers visiting Harry at Ravencroft was added late in production because test audiences were confused about whether Harry had died, been imprisoned, or escaped.
- Creating the Times Square battle sequence between Spider-Man and Electro took a year to complete and required over 36,000 photographs, including photos of more than 100 billboards, to build a digital version of the location.
